The Keys to Self-Development People define success differently. Financial Security Positive impact on others Expertise and professional respect. ~Theses are all viable and common motivators that drive achievement. Whatever their definition, many successful people share these attributes: ~Self-confidence that is free of arrogance ~Self-awareness of strengths, weaknesses and goals ~Fidelity to values and capabilities ~Willingness to challenge the limits of knowledge and experience. ~Willingness to reflect and learn from experience How can you incorporate some of these into your work life? *Seek Feedback Regularly:Be proactive in finding out what people think about your style of interacting and your approach. Be open to and appreciative of the feedback you receive. *Reflect on Performance: Spend time thinking about recent performance and behavior. Take time every day to reflect on the day's work and interactions. At the conclusion of major projects or tasks, think about the quality of what you produced and the effectiveness of your work with others. Celebrate what you have done well and identify opportunities for improvement. *Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses: Build success from your strengths and limit the impact of your weaknesses. Of the two, it is much more important to identify your key strengths and leverage these. As it relates to development for future roles, the management guru Peter Drucker wrote: "One should waste little effort... improving areas of low competence. It takes far more energy and work to improve from in-competence to mediocrity than it takes to improve from first-rate performance to excellence." *Know Your Joys and Passions: What you do each day should satisfy and make you feel good about your contributions. Success is difficult to achieve without that level of satisfaction. People who excel enjoy what they do and do what they enjoy.
