Jewelry Packaging and Display Tips
Displays and style of packaging can affect your customers' perception of your jewelry and its value. Here are tips for making your jewelry packaging a great marketing tool and increasing repeat sales.

Basics of Displaying Jewelry:
1) Display Cards and Hang Tags
Jewelry hang tags and earring cards can give your jewelry a very professional look and shows you take pride in your work. They should have your logo or the name of your jewelry business, with all of your contact info (website URL, e-mail address, phone number). You can put your contact info on the back of the card to keep the front uncluttered. Including this info makes you seem like a legitimate business that will be around for a while. I have even used my business cards by punching holes to place a pair of earrings on.

The customer is more likely to hang on to the card that their jewelry came with. And since they have your contact info handy, customers will contact you or shop on your website when they want to buy more jewelry or have custom pieces made hand crafted jewelry!
Because jewelry is an emotional purchase, consider adding any information that would be interesting and increase the perceived value of the piece. For example, "One-of-a-kind handmade silver pendant by the Hill Tribesman", or "Vintage beads from a antique necklace from the 1920's". Adding anything "unique" about your craft as a jewelry designer would also be a great added feature on the back of the tag.
These jewelry tags can me made of a variety of materials, from paper to metal. It would be your preference. You could make them yourself or have them professionally done. There are many different styles available through a variety of suppliers.

2) Variety of Jewelry Boxes You may use velvet jewelry boxes to display your jewelry and including it with your purchase. This will add a touch of elegance and perception of quality to your customer. Make sure when pricing your jewelry, you include the packaging as part of your cost.

There are endless kinds of packaging you can get from suppliers. From paper bags to pouches and unusual size boxes. When I first stated out, I purchased some small colorful paper bags and put labels on them that displayed my company name, website, email, etc. I later got my own bags printed up along with boxes specifically for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and sets. For special custom made I even had velvet pouches with silk draw strings to place the jewelry in.

3) Jewelry Display Cases
These a good idea for your more expensive pieces of jewelry. It protects the more high end jewelry against theft and creates an impression of how valuable your jewelry is. These can be great when setting up a booth anywhere and displaying at a trade show. Most of these have the availability of including lights that show off your jewelry and make them sparkle! The security feature is a plus, as you can lock these up and giving limited access to the keys. Make sure you keep an extra set hidden away.

There are small portable cases you can use for displaying a few pieces. For example, A ladies dress shop may not have a secure place to display your jewelry in their shop. You can provide a small display case that also locks for a small fee or sell the case to the owner of the shop. This would be between you and the proprietor to decide.

4) Jewelry Shows and Party Displays
My preference for these are the leather-look or velvet "bust" displays. These come in a variety of sizes and materials they are made of. Some of the velvet covered cardboard displays work very nicely. I would suggest having some in black and white. Speaking of colors, make sure you stick with just a few simple colors for displaying your jewelry. It should be eye catching and not too busy.
The "bust" displays I use to showcase a special piece or earring/necklace set. It is very eye catching and gives the customer the opportunity to touch the jewelry and even try it on if they like.

Make sure you have a standing mirror accessible and lots of light to make the jewelry sparkle. As you will realize, jewelry can be an impulse purchase many a time. Make it as easy and inviting as possible. Jewelry parties give you the opportunity to tell a little about of yourself and your business and how you create your jewelry. This can even lead into mentioning you also conduct teaching workshops. This is discussed in another section if you would like to know more on "Workshops".
It is a nice touch to use "props" on your display table such as flowers, and various figures for the season; for example, bunnies for Easter, Snowmen and Santa for Christmas, etc. I like to display my portfolio on the table if I have the room. It has pictures of the types of jewelry I have made and little history of each piece. You can even include some personal information as an artist.
